Art NFT marketplace MakersPlace has announced its immediate closure after six years of operation.
The closure comes as a surprise, as MakersPlace has been one of the leading marketplaces for premier NFT artworks. The platform has featured works by renowned artists such as Banksy, Hackatao, and Vakseen, and has also attracted significant investment from Pantera Capital, Coinbase, Sony, and Eminem, among others.
Despite the closure, all MakersPlace NFTs are minted on Ethereum and will remain fully accessible on secondary NFT marketplaces such as OpenSea.
Collectors do not need to take any action, while artists will need to transfer any NFT art in MakersPlace custodial wallets to their own wallets. Artwork purchases will cease as of that update, with NFT transfers currently scheduled to cease in June 2025.
MakersPlace has also expressed a willingness to "explore opportunities for an asset sale of the company."
