A project that is linked to former U.S. president Donald Trump has been making headlines for quite some time now.

During his campaign for president in September 2024, Trump had promised to "make America great again," but "this time with crypto." He said that a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform would help him do it.

The project is called World Liberty Financial. Initial reports said that it is being developed as a lending protocol or a marketplace for lending and borrowing cryptocurrencies.

However, it should be noted that the lending protocol isn’t functional yet. According to CoinGecko writer Loke Choon Khei, World Liberty Financial is expected to be utilizing the liquidity protocol with Aave, which means it will share revenues with the Aave Decentralized Autonomous Organization once fully launched.

On March 26, 2025, World Liberty Financial announced its plans to launch $USD1, an “institutional-ready stablecoin.”

USD1 will be 100% backed by short-term U.S. government treasuries, U.S. dollar deposits, and other cash equivalents. Each token is intended to maintain a value of $1, fully backed by a reserve portfolio audited regularly by a third-party accounting firm.
