Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has increased its Bitcoin (BTC) holdings with a $6.6 million purchase, bringing its total to 2,100 BTC.

According to a Feb. 20 filing, the Tokyo-based investment firm announced that it has acquired 68.59 BTC for approximately 996 million Japanese yen (around $6.6 million), increasing its total Bitcoin holdings to 2,100 BTC, which constitutes roughly 0.01% of the total Bitcoin supply.

The firm’s latest purchase had an average price of 14.53 million yen per BTC, as per the notice of additional purchase. Notably, Metaplanet also tracks BTC Yield, which measures changes in Bitcoin holdings relative to its fully diluted shares. For Q3 2024, the firm reported a 41.7% BTC Yield, which then surged to 309.8% in Q4 2024.

Having commenced its Bitcoin strategy on April 8, 2024, Metaplanet is aiming to reach 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025 and 21,000 BTC by the end of 2026. With the latest purchase, the firm has now achieved approximately 2.38% completion of its previously disclosed “21 Million Plan,” under which 21 million shares of 0% discount stock acquisition rights were issued to EVO FUND. Following the announcement, Metaplanet’s shares rose by 1.79% on the over-the-counter market.

Earlier in February, Metaplanet shares fell over 8% after the Japanese company announced a 10-for-1 stock split to improve liquidity. This move came after a reverse split in August 2024 that consolidated 10 shares into one. According to Metaplanet, the stock’s rapid surge had made it expensive for investors to enter the market. As previously reported by crypto.news, Metaplanet has become Japan’s top-performing stock, surging 3,600% after shifting its focus to Bitcoin.
