Core Scientific began working in artificial intelligence as early as 2019, well ahead of many other companies in the sector. “Core Scientific started out as a data center operator, mainly providing colocation services as opposed to proprietary mining,” said Wolfie Zhao, head of research at BlocksBridge Consulting.

The operational and financial requirements for AI infrastructure are much higher than those for Bitcoin mining. “The capital requirements for purpose-built infrastructure and GPUs for AI workloads are so high that capital allocators can't afford to take operational risks,” said CJ Burnett, chief revenue officer of Compass Mining.

In other news, CNF previously reported that BitFuFu has acquired an 80-MW Bitcoin mining farm in Ethiopia, aiming to reduce operational costs and increase capacity. With the addition of this new facility, BitFuFu will expand its hosting capacity to over 600 MW, further bolstering its global mining infrastructure.
