After a chaotic few months that saw the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) drop its lawsuit against XRP developer Ripple and announce a new task force to advise on crypto policy, the company is now urging the agency to abandon its past enforcement-heavy tactics and instead offer clear, principle-based guidance.

In a letter addressed to Commissioner Hester Peirce and the SEC’s newly formed Crypto Task Force, Ripple said the agency has “historically created nothing but confusion — issuing guidance that is long, rambling, difficult to decipher, and based on novel standards found nowhere in the law.”

Ripple’s letter calls on the SEC to abandon its past enforcement-heavy tactics and instead offer clear, principle-based guidance. It also praised recent agency statements clarifying that memecoins and certain mining activities fall outside securities laws — and urged the Task Force to use these as models going forward.

“Where the Task Force sees a bright line, such as for President Trump’s statements on meme coins or for the types of mining activity that are not covered by federal securities law, it should strive to create more, not less,” the company wrote.

In another part of the letter, Ripple reaffirmed its support for Commissioner Peirce’s Safe Harbor proposal, particularly for initial coin offerings. This proposal, introduced by Peirce, would give crypto projects a grace period to develop and decentralise before being subject to securities laws.

The March 21 submission coincided with the Task Force’s first public roundtable and capped a big week for Ripple. On Wednesday, CEO Brad Garlinghouse revealed that the SEC decided to drop its appeal of a lower court ruling that largely favoured Ripple in its case.

The post comes after the SEC announced it was forming a task force to advise on crypto policy. The initiative, which will be led by Commissioner Peirce and report directly to Chairman Jay Clayton, is part of a broader push by the Trump administration to make the US a global leader in blockchain and cryptocurrency.

The Biden administration has continued Trump’s pro-crypto stance, with the president recently stating that he is “open to anything” when it comes to a potential Bitcoin ETF.
