A coin expert has urged the British public to check their spare change for a common 20p piece that could be worth up to £80. The coin may appear like any other, but it holds the title of "holy grail" for collectors across the UK due to a minting mistake on a small batch from 2008.

If you're fortunate enough to find one in your loose change, you might just hit the jackpot. The Coin Collecting Wizard shared his knowledge on TikTok, enticing eager coin hunters with the claim: "Your shield 20 pence coin could be worth £50."

In the video, he also mentioned that recent eBay sales of this special coin have seen it being sold for as much as £80, but only if they display a specific error - lacking a printed date.

Delving deeper into the matter, he explained: "It's all to do with a die mix-up at the Royal Mint, causing the coin to have no date."

As it turns out, fewer than 250,000 of these dateless coins were struck among over 136 million produced that year, due to an oversight that paired an old heads side design with a new tails one, leaving the minting date off in the process.
