A rare $20 double eagle gold coin from 1870 sold for $1,440,000 at an auction Tuesday in Costa Mesa, Calif., Stack's Bowers Galleries announced.

The coin, which was minted in San Francisco during the California Gold Rush, is among the finest known examples of the "Type 3" double eagle, according to the auction house.

Only 3,660 of the coins were ever produced, and just a handful are known to still exist, the auction house said.
