Cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has announced plans to burn over $5 billion worth of its native BGB tokens and expand the token’s utility, according to a new whitepaper released on December 27th, 2024.

As part of this initiative, Bitget will burn 800 million BGB tokens from its total supply of 2 billion. This move will reduce the circulating supply to 1.2 billion BGB tokens. The burning process will begin with an immediate and permanent burn of 40% of the total supply, followed by quarterly burns starting in 2025.

Bitget will allocate 20% of its profits from Bitget Exchange and Bitget Wallet to buy back and burn BGB tokens. These profits will be generated from various revenue streams, including spot, futures, and NFT transactions. All burning activities will be recorded on-chain.

The new whitepaper also outlines plans to expand BGB’s utility within both centralized and decentralized ecosystems. This includes enhancing its role in on-chain protocols, making it a core asset for staking, liquidity provision, and airdrop eligibility. Additionally, BGB will be integrated into Bitget Wallet services, enabling multi-chain gas fee payments and extending its use cases to PayFi applications.

This announcement comes as Bitget recently merged its Bitget Token (BGB) and Bitget Wallet Token (BWB), making BGB the unified token for both Bitget’s centralized and decentralized ecosystems.

BGB holders currently enjoy various benefits such as fee discounts, VIP privileges, and access to token farming through Launchpool. Bitget is set to introduce more use cases for BGB in the coming year.

According to the whitepaper, BGB has experienced a surge in demand, with its market capitalization increasing by over 1000% in the past year and over 100-fold since its inception. This growth is attributed to the expanding use cases of the token and the success of Bitget’s diverse ecosystem.
