Cryptocurrencies centered around artificial intelligence have encountered a brutal downturn following their introduction to Binance’s perpetual futures market, sparking concerns about the impact of derivatives trading on smaller digital assets.

Ai16z, which reached a high of $2.42 at the beginning of January, has since seen its value plummet by over 84%, currently sitting at just $0.38. Venice Token (VVV) has also suffered a significant decline, dropping from $18 in late January to around $5.82, marking a 67% decrease.

The downturn escalated after Binance launched perpetual futures for ai16z shortly before its affiliated DAO was rebranded as ElizaOS. The exchange later introduced similar futures for VVV, the token that powers the AskVenice AI ecosystem.

According to some market analysts, these listings have had devastating effects. Ilya Paveliev, co-founder of Arete Capital, believes that perpetual futures have become a tool for aggressive short-selling rather than promoting organic price movement. He claims that traders are using these derivatives to drive prices down while selling off their spot holdings.

According to Paveliev, this creates an environment where large investors can manipulate prices, while market makers, who typically help stabilize assets, withdraw support once a listing goes live.

Paveliev also criticizes Binance's strategy, arguing that the platform prioritizes hype-driven narratives, such as AI and meme coins, over fundamentals. He claims that by listing perpetual futures for tokens with limited liquidity, the exchange amplifies volatility, exposing retail investors to increased risks.
