업비트, 10대 태권도 품새 신동 변재영 후원

국내 최대 암호화폐 거래소 업비트가 태권도 품새 신동으로 불리는 10대 운동선수 변재영을 후원하기로 결정했다.

Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Upbit, has decided to sponsor Byun Jae-young, a teenage athlete dubbed a taekwondo poomsae prodigy, in a bid to contribute to the expansion of lesser-known sports.

국내 최대 암호화폐 거래소 업비트가 태권도 품새 신동으로 불리는 10대 운동선수 변재영을 후원하기로 결정했다.

While taekwondo typically focuses on sparring, poomsae is considered a less flashy discipline.

태권도는 일반적으로 스파링에 중점을 두는 반면, 품새는 덜 화려한 종목으로 간주됩니다.

Last year at just 15 years old, Byun was selected to represent the country and went on to win the gold medal in the freestyle poomsae male under 17 event at the 2024 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships held in Hong Kong in December.

지난해 15세의 나이로 국가대표로 선발된 변 선수는 지난 12월 홍콩에서 열린 2024년 세계태권도품새선수권대회 남자 17세 이하 자유형 품새 종목에서 금메달을 획득했다.

He earned a reputation as a poomsae prodigy after successfully delivering a 1,080-degree spinning kick.

그는 1080도 회전발차기를 성공시키며 품새 신동이라는 명성을 얻었다.

In recognition of his recent achievement, he was named the best athlete in the poomsae category at the Youth Athlete of the Year awards, hosted by the Korea Taekwondo Association on Thursday.

그는 최근의 성과를 인정받아 지난 목요일 대한태권도협회가 주최하는 올해의 청소년 선수상에서 품새 부문 최우수 선수로 선정됐다.

Now 16, the athlete, born to a Korean father and a Filipina mother in a multicultural family, is about to enter high school.

다문화가정에서 한국인 아버지와 필리핀인 어머니 사이에서 태어난 선수는 이제 16살이 되어 고등학교 입학을 앞두고 있다.

"At first, I didn't know much about virtual assets, so I wasn't very familiar with Upbit. However, after doing a commercial shoot and researching online, I realized that Upbit is a very big company in the area," Byun said.

"처음에는 가상자산에 대해 잘 몰랐기 때문에 업비트에 대해 잘 몰랐습니다. 하지만 광고 촬영을 하고 온라인으로 검색을 해보니 업비트가 이 분야에서 아주 큰 회사라는 걸 깨달았습니다." 말했다.

"It was truly amazing and, at the same time, I was really happy to become a sponsored athlete of such a large company. What's especially meaningful to me is that, through Upbit's sponsorship, I now have the opportunity to participate not only in domestic competitions but also in international ones. I believe that through these opportunities, I can gain more experience and build the confidence to compete on bigger stages."

"정말 놀라운 일이면서 동시에 이렇게 큰 기업의 후원을 받는 운동선수가 되어서 정말 기뻤습니다. 특히 저에게 의미 있는 것은 업비트의 후원을 통해 이제 국내 대회뿐만 아니라 대회에도 참가할 수 있는 기회를 갖게 되었다는 점입니다. 대회뿐 아니라 국제 대회에서도 이런 기회를 통해 더 많은 경험을 쌓고 더 큰 무대에서 경쟁할 수 있는 자신감을 얻을 수 있다고 믿습니다."

He said he is currently working harder to make sure that he will get selected for the Asian Junior Taekwondo Poomsae Championships qualifiers this year.

그는 올해 아시아 주니어 태권도 품새 선수권 대회 예선에 선발될 수 있도록 현재 더 열심히 노력하고 있다고 말했다.

"If I am selected, my goal is to achieve good results in that competition as well. Additionally, I hope to perform well in domestic competitions so that I can continue my contract with Upbit next year," he said.

이어 "내가 선정된다면 이번 대회에서도 좋은 성적을 거두는 것이 목표다. 더불어 국내 대회에서도 좋은 성적을 거두어 내년에도 업비트와 계약을 이어갈 수 있도록 하겠다"고 말했다.

Dunamu, the operator of Upbit, has consistently invested in potential. Identifying the growth potential of blockchain and cryptocurrency, the company launched the coin exchange in October 2017.

업비트 운영사 두나무는 꾸준히 잠재력에 투자해왔습니다. 블록체인과 암호화폐의 성장 가능성을 확인한 회사는 2017년 10월 코인 거래소를 출시했습니다.

In this context, the company has a history of supporting underrepresented sports such as track and field and table tennis before deciding to sponsor Byun.

이런 맥락에서 회사는 변 선수의 후원을 결정하기 전부터 육상, 탁구 등 소외된 스포츠를 지원해온 이력이 있다.

It aims to alleviate the difficulties faced by athletes who lack financial support due to limited public attention, and plans to continue sponsoring future generations to enhance the global standing of Korean sports.

대중의 관심이 제한되어 재정적 지원이 부족한 선수들의 어려움을 완화하고, 미래 세대를 지속적으로 후원해 한국 스포츠의 글로벌 위상을 높일 계획이다.

"Upbit is investing in the potential of future generations, ensuring they can continue to challenge themselves without giving up due to social and economic circumstances," an Upbit official said. "We will continue to support future generations so that our efforts can empower them."

업비트 관계자는 “업비트는 미래 세대가 사회, 경제적 여건으로 인해 포기하지 않고 계속해서 도전할 수 있도록 그들의 잠재력에 투자하고 있다”고 말했다. "우리는 우리의 노력이 미래 세대에게 힘을 실어줄 수 있도록 계속해서 미래 세대를 지원할 것입니다."

Upbit will sponsor Byun's training and participation costs for international competitions.

업비트는 변씨의 국제 대회 훈련 및 참가 비용을 후원한다.

The company is also running a campaign, featuring him as the model, across various media, including outdoor and online platforms, centered around the message of supporting future generations with limitless potential.
