South Korea’s central bank, the Bank of Korea (BOK), is not planning to include bitcoin in its foreign exchange reserves, the institution stated on Sunday in response to a query from a member of the National Assembly’s Strategy and Finance Committee.

한국의 중앙 은행 (BOK)은 외환 보호 구역에 비트 코인을 포함시킬 계획이 아니라고 국회의 전략 및 금융위원회 위원의 질문에 따라 일요일에 밝혔다.

While the possibility of bitcoin being part of the bank’s reserves is being considered, ultimately it depends on the government’s decision, the BOK noted in its response, as Korea Economic Daily reported.

비트 코인이 은행의 매장량의 일부가 될 가능성이 고려되고 있지만, 궁극적으로 정부의 결정에 달려 있다고 한국 경제 일일이보고 한 바와 같이, Bok은 그 대응에 지적했다.

The central bank is also wary of bitcoin’s price movements. As the world’s leading cryptocurrency, bitcoin is known for its wild price swings, which the BOK fears would lead to large transaction costs when converting the coin to cash, thus posing a risk to its reserves.

The BOK also pointed out that bitcoin does not meet the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) foreign exchange reserve management standards. The IMF stresses the importance of managing liquidity, market and credit risks, criteria which bitcoin, with its volatile and decentralized nature, does not satisfy.
