A rare 50p coin depicting Kew Gardens has sold for a whopping £700 on eBay.

The coin, which was sold by a seller based in Worcestershire, is described on the Royal Mint website as the "most sought-after" 50p. Only 210,000 of the coins were released into circulation in 2009 and now almost all of them are in private hands.

The face side of the coin depicts the botanical garden, whilst the reverse design - created by Christopher Le Brun - depicts an intricate design of the the famous Chinese Pagoda at Kew.

The seller said: "This rare 2009 Kew Gardens 50p coin celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanical Gardens. Graded by NGC as PF 70 Ultra Cameo, The brilliant uncirculated version of this coin is also available.
