Ride-hailing app Twytch has officially launched in South Africa, introducing the use of blockchain’s verifiable credentials to tackle the safety issues that plague the sector.

Twytch is the first e-hailing platform in Africa to integrate blockchain technology into its identity verification process. The move is aimed at ensuring user safety and security.

Twytch explains that verifiable credentials (VCs) are essentially secure digital versions of identity information, stored cryptographically on a decentralized blockchain, making them nearly impossible to forge or modify.

In addition to ride-hailing services, Twytch will also provide drivers with banking and financial solutions.

“This includes vehicle insurance, retirement, death and disability benefits, wills, estate planning and financial wellness programmes. Drivers will also receive subsidised data and access to smart devices.”

Rodney Douglas, Twytch’s Operations Lead for Africa, announced that the platform will launch city by city starting in February 2025, beginning with Johannesburg.

The company’s long-term goal is to grow across South Africa and into the broader African market. Driver recruitment is already underway, with 12,500 drivers being onboarded nationwide.
