Sonic Labs has canceled plans to launch a US dollar-pegged algorithmic stablecoin and will instead be developing a United Arab Emirates dirham-denominated alternative, co-founder Andre Cronje announced on Thursday.

The firm was originally planning to launch an algorithmic stablecoin with an annual percentage rate (APR) of up to 23%, Cronje said on March 22, according to a report by Cointelegraph. However, just one week later, the firm has reversed course.

The shift in strategy comes shortly after the UAE announced it would launch its digital dirham central bank digital currency (CBDC) in the fourth quarter of 2025.
