A set of rare £5 gold proof coin and £20 banknote to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee has sold at auction for £2,100.

The limited-edition set was released by the Royal Mint in conjunction with the Bank of England to mark the jubilee in 2002.

The ''rare and extremely limited edition'' royal collectables were part of the 2002 celebrations of the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

Deputy head valuer, Tolly Isgrove, said: ''The banknote featured the special cypher ER50 to commemorate 50 years of Queen Elizabeth's reign.

''The ER was not produced for general circulation and therefore these are the only banknotes to carry this cypher, with serial numbers between 151 and 250 for a limited edition set of only 100 to be issued.''

One side of the coin features the Queen on her favourite horse, with her reflective portrait on the other side of the coin.

The set went for £2,100 which exceeded the auction's predicted sale value.

Alongside the rarity of the collectables the vendor made a ''safe investment as precious metals have proved to be fruitful in recent times,” Mr Isgrove added.
