Cryptocurrency prices plunged on Monday after President Donald Trump's hard-line tariff announcements sent the market spiraling, with the sell-off amplified by an unwinding of leveraged bets on digital assets.

Bitcoin fell as much as 6.8% in the last 24 hours, paring those losses after the update on Mexico tariffs. However, the decline on fears of a trade war was more pronounced for other tokens.

At first glance, crypto's negative reaction stems from the same reasons affecting risk assets broadly: Trump's pledge to levy sweeping tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China by Tuesday.

Yet, the decline was made worse by the fact that the crypto market never closes, allowing panicked traders to sell over the weekend, with volatility picking up steam as traders returned on Monday, said Mena. Add to that high levels of leverage in the market, and crypto ended up facing a cascade of liquidations.

Zack Shapiro, head of policy at the Bitcoin Policy Institute, told BI that Ethereum saw the worst of the sell-off due to its more prominent role in the decentralized finance ecosystem, which relies more on automation for trading.

As for bitcoin, Standard Chartered expects a rough patch for the apex token over the next few days. Bitcoin is again at risk of falling below the $90,000 mark, a level the bank sees as a key support threshold for the coin. A drop below that price could trigger a major crypto downturn, Standard Chartered said in January.

In Mena's view, the crypto shakeout may be a healthy pullback, ridding the market of excessive speculation that has built up over the past eight months. In his view, last month's Trump meme coin frenzy was the clearest sign of an overheated market.
