An estimated 86 percent of crypto traders who took positions in a memecoin endorsed by President Javier Milei on Friday ended up losing money, according to research firm Nansen.

The episode has also led to concern about the prospects for the Solana blockchain, the underlying network that hosts the Libra token and tens of thousands of other memecoins. The drama began late Friday night, when Milei directed followers to a website that purported to raise money for small businesses in Argentina using the crypto token. So-called snipers, or trading bots that attempt to front-run gains in hot new cryptocurrencies, began trading when Milei’s initial tweet sparked interest in the market, according to Nansen.
