Rescued From: ResearchOliver's early life was filled with hardship, as he was moved between several research labs, enduring invasive and painful experiments. Born at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in San Antonio, TX, he was separated from his mother after just one day. Over the next several years, Oliver was subjected to various research procedures, including the insertion of a nasogastric tube and a spinal surgery that left him without a disc between two vertebrae.In 2002, Oliver's life took a positive turn when he was rescued by Save the Chimps. He became a beloved member of the sanctuary, known for his light face, robust jaw, and hunched posture. He had a particular fondness for blankets and carried them for comfort. Though it was difficult for Oliver to adjust to social life, he eventually joined Late’s group and enjoyed his new island home in Florida, where he could roam freely.Tragically, Oliver passed away from cardiac fibrosis in 2013, a sudden and untreatable heart condition common in captive chimpanzees. Just hours before his death, he was seen enjoying his time on the island with his fellow chimps.
