Worldcoin Rebrands into World, Launches Ethereum L2 Blockchain Called World Chain
Oct 18, 2024 at 06:04 pm
Worldcoin, the Sam Altman-founded crypto-biometrics project, has rebranded into World and launched an Ethereum layer 2 blockchain called World Chain that should improve efficiency for Worldcoin (WLD) token users.
Worldcoin, a crypto-biometrics project founded by Sam Altman, has undergone a rebranding to become World and launched an Ethereum layer 2 blockchain called World Chain, designed to enhance efficiency for users of the Worldcoin (WLD) token.
The World Chain network boasts support from some of the world's leading blockchain applications and providers, including Optimism and Uniswap, and is described as "the first blockchain designed to benefit humans first."
Boasting the Most Verified Human Users
"Today, World Chain is already the chain with the largest number of individually verified humans," stated World in a Thursday announcement. The project highlighted the native integration of the layer 2 solution with World ID, which it described as "the only anonymous identity verification protocol that exists on-chain today."
Furthermore, World Chain will integrate with on-ramp and off-ramp solutions, as well as stablecoin markets, to cater to the demand from users worldwide who are rapidly adopting cryptocurrencies.
World noted that the majority of World ID holders reside in countries where stablecoin and crypto adoption is surging, and while aiming to drive broader crypto and blockchain adoption, it also prioritizes verified humans.
"World Chain's vision is to ensure that blockchains ultimately benefit humans first," stated World.
Support from Leading Blockchain Service Providers
As mentioned, World Chain is supported by some of the industry's most prominent applications and service providers, including but not limited to:

Introducing World App 3.0
In addition to launching a new blockchain, World also unveiled its "super app for humans" on Thursday, boasting new "powerful" features and product updates, such as the Mini Apps.
The Mini Apps platform enables third-party applications to operate within World App and integrate with a user's World ID. Users can engage in activities such as chatting, topping up their phones using digital assets, playing games with other verified humans, and sending money to friends.

Moreover, World App includes a wallet that, according to World, is now the third-largest crypto wallet globally. The World App Wallet supports World Chain, features new ramps for easier fund deposits and withdrawals, includes World Pay for paying anyone worldwide at no cost within seconds, and offers a vault where users can earn on assets they hold through the app.
Toward a Human-First World Amid Global Scrutiny
World's rebranding and launch of its layer 2 blockchain come amidst global scrutiny regarding its biometrics collection process, which some governments have flagged for potential privacy concerns.
Following a three-month ban order in Portugal and Spain, World has adjusted its system to allow users to "unverify" their World IDs by permanently deleting their iris codes.
