In the past 20 hours, WisdomTree, a major ETF issuer in the U.S., executed a large transaction, transferring 8,258 Bitcoin (BTC), valued at approximately $600 million
Major ETF issuer WisdomTree has moved 8,258 Bitcoin (BTC) and 48.83 Ethereum (ETH), collectively valued at around $600 million and $125,000, respectively, to the Coinbase exchange in the past 20 hours, according to data from crypto analytics firm IntoTheBlock.
As of January 2024, New York-based WisdomTree manages approximately $99.5 billion in assets globally, with investments spanning multiple asset classes and countries. It offers exposure to Bitcoin, Ethereum and select altcoins through cryptocurrency-backed funds.
After this recent transaction, WisdomTree still holds 5,611 BTC, valued at approximately $388 million, and 16,767 ETH, valued at approximately $41.9 million. These transfers, however, have prompted speculation about possible adjustments to the firm's cryptocurrency strategies.
Recent decisions by WisdomTree in the cryptocurrency market also contribute to this narrative, as the firm withdrew its application for a spot Ethereum ETF without providing specific reasons. This withdrawal has led to suggestions that WisdomTree sees limited demand for this product.
For instance, WisdomTree's existing Bitcoin ETF is still trading with a valuation of $217 million, making it one of the smaller Bitcoin ETFs among U.S. issuers.
Considering the timing of the Coinbase move and recent ETF changes, it appears that WisdomTree may be adopting a more cautious approach to cryptocurrency-oriented investments. Some speculate that this large BTC movement could indicate an effort to align the firm's direct cryptocurrency holdings with cumulative ETF net flows.
