West Virginia football rolls past Oklahoma State, 38-14, behind big first half
Oct 06, 2024 at 07:21 am
The West Virginia University football team (3-2, 2-0 Big 12) coasted to victory in the second half after building a 24-point halftime lead in a 38-14 win over Oklahoma State (3-3, 0-3 Big 12) Saturday afternoon at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
WVU football coasted to victory in the second half after building a 24-point halftime lead in a 38-14 win over Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
As is typical for Neal Brown, WVU elected to receive the opening kickoff when it won the coin toss. Brown’s opening script was run-heavy, and the Mountaineers marched 55 yards down the field on 12 plays before settling for a 39-yard field goal to go up 3-0.
It was WVU’s longest drive of the first half, but it was also its least successful possession of the half. The Mountaineers scored points on all five of their first five drives to start the game. Four of them ended in touchdowns.
Following the field goal, WVU forced a punt from Oklahoma State after an offensive holding call stalled the Cowboys’ first drive of the day. Greene then led WVU into Oklahoma State territory with a balanced attack, and he set the Mountaineers up in the red zone with a 39-yard scramble for their most explosive play of the drive.
On that rush, though, Greene suffered what appeared to be a shoulder injury, and he exited the game.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Nicco Marchiol, who made his second-career appearance in Stillwater in 2022 in relief for an injured Greene, completed a 10-yard scoring pass to sophomore receiver Traylon Ray three plays later to put WVU up 10-0.
On defense, the Mountaineers forced a three-and-out on the ensuing drive. WVU outgained OSU 120-16 on their first two drives of the game, even after the Cowboys tallied 18 yards on their first four offensive snaps.
Led by Marchiol at quarterback, WVU responded with its second touchdown drive of the day, capped off with a 10-yard scoring rush for Jahiem White for his fourth touchdown in the Mountaineers’ last four games.
Just when things looked to be going WVU’s way, Oklahoma State flipped the field on its next kickoff return to set the Cowboys up with a short field down 17-0.
Knocking on the door of the WVU red zone, Bowman made his first big mistake of the afternoon by throwing an interception to Mountaineers safety Jaheem Joseph over the middle of the field in front of the end zone. It was Joseph’s first interception as a Mountaineer, and WVU took over at its own 13-yard line.
At this point, Greene was back from the locker room and reentered the game. He started the drive with an incompletion, but then WVU ran the ball seven consecutive times for 87 yards and a touchdown to go up 24-0.
This time, Greene scrambled 16 yards for his third rushing score of the year.
Oklahoma State started moving with urgency on offense, and Bowman led the Cowboys into the end zone for the first time of the afternoon while facing a three-score deficit. He cut the lead to 24-7 on an eight-yard pass to Rashod Owens with just under two minutes remaining in the half.
Enter Greene and the WVU two-minute offense.
The Mountaineers ran nine plays, which included a 15-yard CJ Donaldson touchdown run, on their fifth and final scoring drive of the half to take a 31-7 lead before the break. By the time the clock struck 0:00 to signal halftime, WVU had outgained Oklahoma State 345-115.
The Mountaineers also outrushed the Cowboys 259-43 in the first half. It marked WVU’s highest first-half rushing total since 2015.
As Oklahoma State fans hit the exits, a quiet third quarter with no points scored commenced. The main points of note from the scoreless frame included an injury to Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon II and another to WVU wide receiver Rodney Gallagher III, who appeared to exit the game with a knee injury.
Both teams added another touchdown in the fourth quarter, though. Donaldson recorded his second score of the game, and his 16th touchdown in his last 16 appearances, to put WVU up 38-7. Oklahoma State followed with its second score of the night on the ensuing drive to cut it to a 38-14 lead, but it was far too little too late.
The Mountaineers added over 100 more rushing yards in the second half, raising their total to 389 rushing yards on 65 attempts. That is the second-highest team rushing total in the Neal Brown era and the most rushing attempts in a game by a WVU team since the 2006 Sugar Bowl.
