Web3 Bulacan Denies Ties to Worldcoin Iris Scanning Initiative Amid Social Media Reports

The statement clears up confusion about Web3 Bulacan's role in the Worldcoin iris scanning initiative in exchange for WLD tokens

Web3 Bulacan Denies Ties to Worldcoin Iris Scanning Initiative Amid Social Media Reports

Thousands of people in Bulakan, Bulacan, have reportedly lined up to participate in the Worldcoin registration and airdrop event, which involves scanning their irises in exchange for cryptocurrency rewards.

However, Web3 Bulacan, a local blockchain organization, has clarified that it is not affiliated with the ongoing Worldcoin activities in the municipality.

In a statement shared with BitPinas on Monday, Web3 Bulacan said that it has been receiving inquiries regarding the Worldcoin registration and airdrop event in Bulakan.

“We would like to inform everyone that the current Worldcoin registration activities happening in Bulakan, Bulacan, are not affiliated with Web3 Bulacan in any way,” the group said.

“If you have any questions, concerns, or inquiries regarding this activity, we strongly encourage you to direct them to the organizing team or the respective LGU for accurate information and assistance,” it added.

The Worldcoin initiative has sparked interest and controversy due to its reliance on biometric data collection. The organization aims to create a global network of people who can be identified and verified through their iris scans.

In exchange for participating, users receive WLD tokens, which can be used to operate and maintain the Worldcoin network. The tokens also grant holders the ability to participate in future airdrops and governance.

According to social media posts, the Worldcoin registration and airdrop event in Bulakan began in mid-January and has seen large crowds of people gathering at designated locations.

While some posts suggest that the event has expanded to other cities in Bulacan, these claims remain unverified.

On the Worldcoin website, the Philippines is not listed among the countries with active Orb verification devices. However, Bulacan is mentioned as one of the provinces where people can participate in the initiative.

In November 2023, Worldcoin shifted Orb Operators’ rewards from USDC stablecoins to WLD tokens to boost its token circulation and network growth.
