Could you be unknowingly sitting on a small fortune? If you have this rare coin, the answer could be yes
Sep 30, 2024 at 08:13 pm
Not long ago, collectors were informed that one of these coins fetched a whopping £127,000 at auction, so it's definitely worth keeping an eye on your loose change.
People could be sitting on a small fortune without even knowing it, thanks to a rare coin blunder.
Recently, certain coins have been causing quite a buzz after two old pennies sparked interest online.
Not long ago, collectors were left gobsmacked after discovering that one of these coins fetched a whopping £127,000 at auction, so it's definitely worth keeping an🔎 eye on your loose change.
On TikTok, user @CoinCollectingWizard, who has amassed a following of 198,000, posted a video of himself cleaning a coin valued at £1,000.
He revealed: "Did you know about the New Pence 2p coin worth £1,000? Don't worry though this one is 1971 and not the rare date.
"Want to know what rare New Pence coins to look out for, keep watching. After the design changed from New Pence to Two Pence in 1982, a mistake was made during production of a small number of 1983 coins," reports the Mirror.
He went on to explain that these coins were mistakenly struck with the old inscription New Pence, so what you really need to be on the lookout for are the 1983 2p coins.
The user added: "If it says New Pence on the reverse instead of the words Two Pence then you have found it.
"If you are lucky enough to find a 1983 New Pence 2p in your change, then it is worth around £1,000. You are more likely to find the coin in the 1983 Royal Mint set though as this is where the mistake happened."
Collectors have unearthed coins that were once valued at around £400, and according to one enthusiast, they might fetch an even higher price today.
The sought-after error piece has become a collector's dream after a limited batch of coins was released with a wording mistake.
This blunder has made the coins exceedingly valuable, with the correct pre-1983 'New Pence' coins paling in comparison to those bearing the error.
The coin's revelation on TikTok has attracted hundreds of likes and comments.
