After years of forgoing one of the largest digital assets, crypto exchange Kraken has finally decided to support Binance Coin (BNB).
The exchange announced on Thursday the activation of deposit and withdrawal functions for BNB, with full trading set to commence on April 22.
Upon listing, BNB will be open for trading against multiple pairs including USD, EUR, USDC, and USDT. Nonetheless, Kraken clarified that users in specific jurisdictions may encounter limitations depending on local regulations.
The crypto community reacted with a blend of amusement and disbelief. Some expressed surprise that Kraken had taken so long to integrate the token, which ranks fifth by market capitalization.
In a lighthearted response, Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao furthered the amusement, referring to BNB as a “memecoin” in a tweet.
Why Now? Kraken's decision to onboard BNB follows a period of regulatory maturation around the asset, especially in the U.S. The exchange, which expanded its services significantly during the Trump era, appears to be positioning itself more competitively in the evolving crypto landscape.
BNB's popularity is evident in the usage of Binance's ecosystem and chain, which has seen increased activity and contributed to substantial token burns—over 60 million BNB have been permanently removed from circulation, amounting to more than $34 billion in value.
