Tiny detail on £1 coin making it worth 60 times its face value

Tiny detail on £1 coin making it worth 60 times its face value

The new £1 coin is a 12-sided coin that was released in 2017 to replace the old "round pound" that was previously used.

The exact tiny detail to spot on your £1 coin that could make it 60 times its face value at auction has been revealed.

According to TikTok star The Coin Collecting Wizard some of these coins were minted in 2016 making them "extra special".

He said: "This mark was added only for special sets, and only a limited number of coins have it.

"It's called a crosslet cross and it’s used to denote coins that were struck in 2016.

"This tiny crosslet cross can be found just below the design near the rim of the coin. It's easy to miss, but collectors are willing to pay big money for it."

If your 2016 coin is missing the mark then it will likely only be worth face value.

But if it features the mark then it could be worth up to £60.

After more than 30 years in the nation’s pockets, the familiar round £1 coin was replaced with an all new, 12-sided £1 coin in 2017.

Released on 28 March 2017, the new £1 features a range of overt and covert security features that, when combined, protects it from increasingly sophisticated counterfeit operations, making it the most secure coin in the world.

The coin pays tribute to the British monarch, with a new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by彫刻家イアン・麦克莱德. It is the fifth official portrait of the Queen to appear on British coins during her reign. The design also features the words ‘ROYAL MINT 2015’ and the small initials ‘I.M.’ for the彫刻家, Ian McLeid.

The coin’sのデザイン is based on the designs of previous British coins, and it is made from a unique combination of two metals: a nickel-brass outer and a copper centre.

The coin’sのデザイン and specifications were the subject of a ten-week public consultation in 2014.

The final specification of the new 12-sided £1 coin and method of introduction were decided after a ten-week public consultation in 2014. The consultation considered the physical and material characteristics of the coin, as well as the parameters for the transition.

Following the coin’s introduction on 28 March 2017, there was a six-month period when the current round £1 coin and the new 12-sided £1 coin were in circulation at the same time.

Her Majesty’s Treasury and The Royal Mint worked closely with industry throughout the co-circulation period to introduce the new coin in a manageable way and ensure the smooth return of the old £1 coins.

The round £1 coin lost its legal tender status at midnight on 15 October 2017.
