Tezos has activated its 17th protocol upgrade, known as Quebec. This upgrade is a major milestone in Tezos’ journey towards sustainability and performance. Led by Nomadic Labs, Trilitech, and Functori, the protocol is designed to increase the speed, strengthen the staking mechanism, and make Tezos more decentralized and secure.
The Quebec upgrade introduces several key improvements. It reduces the block time on the Tezos network from 10 to 8 seconds, speeding up transactions and reducing the finality time to 16 seconds. This makes Tezos even more ideal for use cases such as gaming and payments. Importantly, these performance gains do not affect the cost of hardware required for consensus participation, allowing bakers (validators) to use low-cost technology to maintain the decentralized nature of Tezos.
“With the Quebec upgrade, Tezos is now faster, more economically strong, and more appealing for staking without sacrificing any decentralization,” said Yann Régis-Gianas, Head of Engineering at Nomadic Labs. He highlighted the role of decentralized governance in shaping the upgrade and ensuring the long-term security of the Tezos network.
The Quebec upgrade also addresses concerns regarding network inflation. It adapts Tezos’ staking mechanisms further, building upon the Adaptive Issuance introduced in the Paris Protocol. This mechanism ensures that tez, the network’s native currency, is issued in direct relation to the needs of the network’s security, preventing token inflation.
The upgrade increases the amount of external stake a baker can take up to nine times their own, as opposed to the previous limit of five times. This makes staking more attractive and reduces the risks of centralization in the network. Additionally, the upgrade ensures that returns are three times higher, making staking rewards more attractive than delegation.
The Tezos Quebec upgrade paves the way for the Tezos X vision, solidifying Tezos’ position as a sustainable, evolving blockchain platform. This milestone comes as the Tezos ecosystem gains momentum, with new initiatives like the uranium.io marketplace launching on the EVM-compatible Layer 2 blockchain powered by Tezos Smart Rollups. These developments are increasing interest in real-world asset tokenization, further highlighting the growth of Tezos influence in the blockchain space.
The successful launch of the Quebec upgrade demonstrates the network’s commitment to innovation. As the community discusses the next upgrade, ‘R,’ anticipation builds for further progress towards Tezos’ high-performance vision.
