Texas and South Carolina finish tied for first place in the Southeastern Conference

The Texas Longhorns will be heading into the Southeastern Conference Tournament as a one seed, but not without a tiebreaker.

After Texas defeated Florida, and South Carolina survived Kentucky on Sunday, the two teams finished tied for first place in the Southeastern Conference.

A turnover by the Gamecocks gave the Wildcats a chance to take the lead and earn the tournament berth. However, South Carolina forced a turnover of its own, and ultimately hit two free throws to ice the game.

With the win, South Carolina finished in first place in the conference, while a loss would have sent the Wildcats to the tournament.

The two teams split their two head-to-head matchups, both teams have the same record in conference play, 15-1.

Texas and South Carolina were crowned co-champions for the SEC regular season crown, but only one team can be the first seed in the SEC Tournament.

The tiebreaker starts with the head to head record. Since the two teams each beat the other one once, it moves to record against highest ranked common conference opponents. Neither team has another conference loss, meaning they move on to the third tiebreaker—a coin flip.

Commissioner Greg Sankey will flip a coin during halftime of the LSU-Ole Miss game, which tips off at 3 p.m. One side of the coin has the Longhorns’ logo, the other the Gamecocks’. Whichever team it lands on gets the first seed in the tournament. SEC Network will televise the flip.

The No. 1 seed of the tournament plays their first game at 11 a.m. CT on Friday, and plays the winner of the game between the 8 and 16/9 seeds. The 2 seed plays the winner of the 7 seed and the 10/15 seeds at 5 p.m. CT.

Regardless of how the coin flip turns out, Texas will have to play tough teams to make it far in the tournament in a strong conference like the SEC. Having all but guaranteed a one seed in the NCAA Tournament, a deep run to the SEC Championship could give the Horns the number one overall seed, and mark the end of a successful first year in the SEC.
