Tether Moves $780M Worth of Bitcoin into Its Reserve, Its Largest Transfer Since March

Stablecoin issuer Tether has moved almost $780 million in Bitcoin into its Bitcoin reserve, according to data from Arkham Intelligence.

Two separate transfers were made on December 30, with one transfer being 7,628.9 BTC and the other being 775.6 BTC. In total, 8,404.5 BTC was transferred, which is valued at $777.4 million at the current Bitcoin price of around $92,500.

Tether’s Bitcoin reserve now consists of 83,759 BTC, which is valued at almost $7.75 billion at current prices.

Earlier this year, Tether announced plans to allocate up to 15% of its net realized operating profits towards purchasing Bitcoin, which may be a contributing factor to the large transfer.

The last major transfer into Tether’s Bitcoin reserve occurred on March 31, when the firm added about 8,888 BTC. This transfer may have been made in response to Bitcoin breaking past $70,000 for the first time and as Bitcoin ETFs became a reality.

In other Tether-related news, the stablecoin issuer is set to retire its euro-pegged stablecoin, EURt (EURT), across all blockchains.

This move comes as the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) legislation takes effect in the European Union. Tether has stated that EURt will no longer be supported, and users are advised to redeem their holdings by November 25, 2025.

Tether has already stopped minting new EURt tokens, and the last acquisition request for EURT was processed in 2022.

Despite retiring EURt, Tether is reportedly still planning to invest in MiCA-compliant projects, such as the EURq and USDq stablecoins developed by Dutch fintech firm Quantoz Payments.

These stablecoins are backed by Tether, Kraken exchange, and Fabric Ventures. Additionally, Tether participated in a Series B funding round for European stablecoin issuer StablRoutput.
