Sui Overflow Global Hackathon Bolsters Funding to $1 Million

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands - April 22nd, 2024

Sui, the innovative Layer 1 blockchain renowned for its exceptional performance and infinite horizontal scaling capabilities, has witnessed a remarkable surge in funding for Sui Overflow. This global virtual hackathon is designed to inspire the development of groundbreaking products on the Sui network. The initial funding of $500,000 has doubled to an impressive $1 million, thanks to the enthusiastic support of industry leaders such as Alibaba Cloud, AngelHack, and dWallet.

The substantial prize pool aims to attract builders from around the globe to showcase their expertise on the Sui network. Participants will demonstrate their projects to a panel of esteemed judges, competing in categories such as Consumer & Mobile, Infrastructure & Tooling, Gaming, and DeFi. Developers are encouraged to leverage the unique features of the Sui ecosystem, including zkLogin, Advanced Move Features, Randomness, and Multi-chain capabilities.

Sam Blackshear, Co-founder/CTO of Mysten Labs and creator of the Move smart contract language, expressed his enthusiasm for Sui Overflow: "This hackathon provides both new and experienced developers with an unparalleled opportunity to showcase their Move skills and explore the powerful primitives of Sui. Past Sui hackathons have yielded remarkable projects, and I am eager to witness the groundbreaking innovations that will emerge from this global event."

Sui-sponsored hackathons have served as a fertile ground for the inception and growth of successful projects on the network. Scallop, a DeFi protocol with an impressive $117M TVL, originated at Sui's Seoul Builder House in 2023. Navi Protocol, another leading DeFi protocol with over $130M TVL, emerged victorious at the Sui X KuCoin hackathon.

In addition to the unwavering support of title sponsor dWallet Labs, Sui Overflow boasts a renowned roster of sponsors, including Elixir Capital, Alibaba Cloud, Comma3 Ventures, MoveBit, Scallop, GSR, Supra, Wormhole, AngelHack, Pyth, Ryze Labs, and ZettaBlock. The awards for each category comprise $30,000 for first place, $15,000 for second, and $7,500 for two additional runner-ups. Notably, the hackathon will also distribute 10 $2,500 University Awards and 10 $2,500 Community Favorite Awards. Participants are not restricted to a single category and can participate simultaneously in multiple tracks, potentially accumulating awards exceeding $100,000.

The increased funding to $1 million will enable Sui Overflow participants to receive accelerated Sui Foundation Grant Funding alongside other benefits, such as audits and credits designed to facilitate the successful launch of their projects post-hackathon.

"The homegrown projects that emerge from developer meetups and hackathons like Sui Overflow are the lifeblood of the Sui ecosystem," said Greg Siourounis, Managing Director of the Sui Foundation. "The overwhelming support from the Sui community has significantly enhanced the impact of Overflow, allowing us to extend potential rewards beyond our planned tracks. This funding will empower the most promising projects with audits, credits, and grants, propelling their success."

"Sui Overflow transcends the realm of a mere event; it represents the genesis of blockchain's brightest future innovators," remarked Omer Sadika, Co-Founder of dWallet Network. "We are honored to collaborate with our esteemed partners and eagerly anticipate the transformative outcomes of this hackathon."
