Steven Fret Earns First Career Stakes Victory at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racing

Journeyman jockey Steven Fret earned his first career stakes victory Monday at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racing when he piloted Cast a Coin to a neck victory in the $45,000 Tin Cup Chalice Stakes.

The 32-year-old jockey is from San Juan, Puerto Rico and has been a journeyman rider for approximately twelve years. This was his 51st lifetime victory.

The 2-year-old Cast a Coin rallied in the stretch to outkick Notfanutin by a neck in the six-furlong sprint. The son of Central Banker registered his second lifetime victory for owner Gold Bear Farm. He completed the six-furlong distance in a time of 1:12.97 and paid $7.20, $4.00 and $2.70.

Notfanutin was a game second and returned $5.60 and $2.90. Mr. Sugar Daddy was third and paid $3.00.

The $45,000 Tin Cup Chalice Stakes was the final event on the 2024 FLGR stakes calendar. Five live racing days remain before the season concludes on November 27.

The Tin Cup Chalice Stakes was named after one of the best horses to ever run at FLGR. Tin Cup Chalice was the first and only 3-year-old ever to sweep all three legs of the Big Apple Triple. The feat, which included the $150,000 New York Derby at FLGR, was accomplished in 2008. The bay New York-bred owned by Scott Van Laer and trainer Michael LeCesse also won the Grade 2 $500,000 Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park under jockey Pedro Rodriguez.
