Even before the opening kickoff, the national championship game between Ohio State and Notre Dame sparked frustration among college football fans.
Fans noticed something a bit off during the coin toss of the national championship game between Ohio State and Notre Dame on Monday night.
After the coin toss, lead official Steve Marlowe caught the coin, a move that drew the attention of many watching at home.
"Can we talk about the ref catching the coin toss? We playing 3 card Monty?" one fan asked.
"Why does this ref catch the flip. You never catch the flip on a coin toss," another added.
"This coin toss needs to be investigated I legit play that trick on my kids," a third fan said.
Marlowe and his crew did receive a showering of boos, but it was after it was announced they were from the SEC.
"Atlanta crowd booing the SEC officiating crew before the game starts. Both fanbases," J.D. PicKell of On3 noted on X. "Electric Midwest vibe in the building."
Ohio State won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Notre Dame received the opening kickoff and scored on their first drive, taking nearly 10 minutes off the clock.
