The Most Sought-After Coins By Collectors Are Worth a Small Fortune
Sep 03, 2024 at 10:51 pm
America minted several coins and bills that are no longer used. The $10 Liberty Head Eagle from 1868 is just one example, and like the others, collectors highly coveted it.
America has a long and storied history when it comes to currency, and over the years, several coins and bills have been minted that are no longer used.
From a $10 Liberty Head Eagle to a $20 gold coin, these pieces of history are now highly coveted by coin collectors.
One of the most sought-after coins is the $10 Liberty Head Eagle from 1868, and like the others, collectors highly coveted it.
The obverse, or head side, features a bust of Lady Liberty with a beaded cap. She is encircled by 13 stars, representing the original colonies.
On the reverse, an eagle with its wings spread is clutching a shield and arrows.
A scroll above the eagle reads "In God We Trust," and the bottom says "Ten D." to signify the worth.
The design was also struck in copper and aluminum between 1838 and 1907.
It is believed that only 10,630 $10 coins were minted in 1868, according to the Numismatic Guaranty Company.
However, there are only four examples of this gold pattern known by experts.
One of the known existing $10 coins has been in the Michelson Collection at the Connecticut State Library since 1913, leaving only three for collectors.
The finest-certified coin sold for $930,000 by Heritage Auctions in 2024.
The auctioned-off coin retained its reflective gold shine throughout the years, contributing to its value.
Another example of currency the country no longer uses is the 1852-O $20 gold coin.
Only about 190,000 were minted, according to experts at Coin Book USA.
Coin collectors will pay top dollar for a $20 gold coin. Depending on condition, they've sold at auction for between $4,600 and upwards of $175,648.
The coin's obverse looks extremely similar to the one on the $10 Liberty Head, with just a few differences in Liberty's hair.
The reverse of the coins is very different. The $20 piece has a very elaborate eagle design, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons.
One coin is currently priced at $14,500 on Heritage Auctions.
It was graded AU53 by the NGC, on a scale of 70.
The grading scale considers five main components: strike, surface preservation, luster, coloration, and eye appeal.
This $20 coin was graded highly due to its rich orange-gold surfaces with copper-red coloration.
