The S&P 500 (^GSPC 1.09%) market index has seen a total return of 25% in 2024. That's a fantastic year for the stock market, but it can't hold a candle to the crypto market.
Solana (SOL) has outperformed both Bitcoin (BTC) and the stock market by a wide margin over the last two years. While both BTC and the S&P 500 have risen by triple-digit percentages, Solana has soared by an incredible 2,000%. This astronomical gain is due in part to Solana's recent surge, which began in the summer of 2022. However, it's important to note that Solana's surge comes after a steep decline, as the cryptocurrency had fallen from $259 to $10 per token during the same time period.
Solana's recent price surge is also being fueled by its increasing use in real-world applications. As a top performer in executing smart contracts quickly, Solana is well-suited for automating financial transactions and other asset-based changes, especially when handling a high volume of these decentralized programs simultaneously. This capability makes Solana a valuable cryptocurrency for applications such as mobile games, blockchain-based trading platforms, and non-fungible token (NFT) sales.
Despite Solana's impressive performance, some investors may wonder if it can continue to outperform Bitcoin, especially given BTC's strong performance and growth catalysts. While Solana has certainly outperformed BTC over the last two years, it's important to note that past performance does not guarantee future results.
However, I believe that Solana still has the potential to outperform Bitcoin, at least in the short to medium term. Here's why:
Solana is still early in its adoption curve. While it's now a top-10 cryptocurrency by market capitalization, Solana is still relatively unknown to the mainstream. This gives it a lot of room to grow in terms of both price and mainstream awareness.
Solana has a strong team and community. The cryptocurrency's founders and developers are highly experienced and passionate about Solana's success. And the crypto also has a large and engaged community of supporters.
Overall, I believe that Solana is still a good cryptocurrency to own in 2024. While it's impossible to say for sure how much more it will outperform Bitcoin, I wouldn't be surprised if Solana continues to beat BTC by a significant margin over the next couple of years.
