The No. 1 seed in the SEC Women’s Tournament came down to a tie-breaking coin flip this afternoon. Now, we know if it came up Gamecocks or Longhorns for Greg Sankey today at the league office.

At 15-1 apiece in the SEC, they had already moved past the first two of the three tiebreakers as they split their season series against one another, with a 67-50 win for the Gamecocks in Columbia in January before a 66-62 win for the Longhorns in Austin in February, while also not having a record to compare against their highest-rated common opponent as neither lost another game to anyone else in league play.

This had the tiebreaker coming down to the teams’ respective strength of schedule, which was determined by adding up the NET rankings of each team’s conference opponents. That saw South Carolina come out on top as they had a total NET ranking of 64 among their league foes while Texas’s came out to 90.

However, in a surprising move, the SEC Network announced that the tiebreaker wouldn't be decided by strength of schedule, but rather by a coin flip.

This afternoon, the league commissioner flipped a coin in his office to determine the final bracket for the upcoming tournament in Greenville.

“Okay, here we go,” Sankey said with the flip.

“Execution under pressure. Execution under pressure,” joked Sankey following the result. “Yeah, I’ve been here for two hours flipping the coin practicing so things happen with purpose here so we executed well.”

This had South Carolina and Texas tied in the final conference standings with 15-1 records. Each team won at home to close out the regular season with the No. 6 Gamecocks winning at 78-66 over No. 15 Kentucky and the No. 1 Longhorns winning 72-46 over Florida.

"Great basketball and two great teams that are champions of the Southeastern Conference. That’s what’s happened this season," Sankey said.

With this, South Carolina will play their opening game at 12 p.m. EST as the first game on Friday while Texas will open their first appearance in that field by starting the second session at 6 p.m. EST later that night. That will be part of what Sankey expects to be another great event inside Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

“I would expect what we’ve seen today,” Sankey said. “lose games, an upset or two. Teams that are right on that cut line, that borderline, or inside the bubble or outside the bubble know they have another opportunity against the highest level of competition to show themselves in front of the selection committee.”

“We’ve had outstanding ticket sales. Our hosts in Greenville have been great hosts over the years. It’s a wonderful city. Hopefully we can continue to build a following around our women’s basketball tournament.”
