Aussies are being urged to look out for the “hard to find” coin as it is sought-after by coin collectors.
A rare 20 cent coin from the 1970s could be worth up to 400 times its face value simply because of the year it was minted.
Aussies are being urged to look out for the “hard to find” coin as it is sought-after by coin collectors.
According to Valuecoins, the 1970 20 cent coin is "rare" and "hard to find", with the Royal Australian Mint only creating 8.9 million of the coins making them "one to hold onto".
The coin could fetch between $1 to $80 depending on its condition and how circulated it was.
Coins can be worth a lot more than their face value for a number of reasons, including errors made by the mint or simply because of their low mintage.
A 1966 “wavy baseline” 20 cent coin, for example, has been known to fetch up between $3,000 and $5,000 when in perfect condition.
Coins aren't the only items that can be worth a lot more than expected.
Earlier this year, a rare $1 coin with a tiny error was up for grabs at auction for up to $5,000.
The 1998 Commonwealth Games $1 coin had been put up for sale on eBay for an "unbelievable" price.
According to the seller, the coin was "extremely rare" due to a "tiny error" with the coin's design.
"This coin is a must-have for any serious Commonwealth Games coin collector," the seller said.
"It is sure to be a valuable addition to any collection."
