Ross Ulbricht Tweets for the First Time in 11 Years After Being Pardoned by President Trump, Expressing Gratitude for Second Chances and Support, While His Associated Cryptocurrency Token Experiences a Price Drop Following a Three-Month Surge
Jan 24, 2025 at 01:29 pm
Ulbricht was the founder of the Silk Road darknet marketplace. Silk Road operated as a secret service on the Tor network and facilitated the anonymous buying and selling of illegal drugs as well as other goods using Bitcoin (BTC).
Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the Silk Road darknet marketplace, tweeted for the first time in over 11 years after being pardoned by President Trump.
Ulbricht thanked President Trump for the pardon, which he called a “second chance,” and expressed gratitude for the support he had received.
He also highlighted the importance of second chances and thanked everyone who had supported him throughout his ordeal, calling it a “victory” for all involved.
“After being pardoned by President Trump, Ross Ulbricht Tweeted for the First Time in Over 11 Years.”
Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 2015 for his role in operating Silk Road, a secret service on the Tor network that facilitated the anonymous buying and selling of illegal drugs and other goods using Bitcoin (BTC).
However, his sentence was later reduced to 30 years in prison on appeal.
While in prison, Ulbricht's X account was managed by his wife.
However, before his arrest, Ulbricht denied any association with any meme coin that bore his name.
Despite this, a cryptocurrency of a similar name was launched in Jun. 2024, and it soared as high as $0.04243 on Jan. 22, 2025, the day Ulbricht was fully pardoned by the President.
According to CoinMarketCap, the ROSS token has now seen a dip in its price after almost three months of being bullish.
Does Ross Ulbricht Have Any Crypto Holdings to His Name?
According to Fortune Crypto, at the time of his arrest, Ross Ulbricht had over 144,000 BTCs in his possession.
Following his arrest, the court ordered the forfeiture of nearly $184 million, which was then put up for auction by the government.
The U.S. Marshals Service sold its BTCs in 2014 when the asset's price crashed to $300, yielding a total of $48 million from the auctions.
However, if the proceeds were calculated based on today's prices, the BTCs would be valued at an astonishing $14 billion.
Moreover, the FBI wallet that sold Ulbricht’s crypto still has a balance of nearly $129,000.
Currently, despite being pardoned, it seems unlikely that Ulbricht will be able to recover his forfeited assets, as the law does not retroactively return property once the proceeds have been spent.
However, in a show of support, Kraken donated about $111,111 in BTC to Ulbricht on Jan. 23 to help him get back on his feet after being released from prison.
