The Solana-based project is, at its core, a combination of a network built out of existing public WiFi networks and individual hotspots launched by Roam miners.
Roam is a Solana-based project that aims to create a global decentralized WiFi network. Users can contribute to the network by setting up hotspots or joining the platform, and they will be rewarded with ROAM tokens for their participation.
The project combines existing public WiFi networks with individual hotspots launched by Roam miners to form a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN). Participants can purchase miners/routers that allow them to set up a public hotspot and earn Roam points in the process, according to an announcement shared by Solana on X.
On the individual level, users can earn Roam points by logging in daily, inviting friends to join the platform, running hotspots and adding new WiFi hotspots. These points can then be burned for ROAM tokens, which can be staked and used for community governance.
The platform utilizes a proof-of-service consensus mechanism that is based on the uptime of users' hotspots. A token generation event with a 20 million ROAM airdrop was announced in August.
Secure Communications From an end-user perspective, ease of use is the main selling point. Once users log in securely, they are recognized by all of the individual WiFi networks on the platform and automatically switched from one hotspot to another as they move, according to Roam's website.
Users are assigned a decentralized identifier that securely identifies them based on a digital profile stored on the blockchain rather than a central database when they first log into a WiFi hotspot. They also receive verifiable identifiers that provide only the essential information needed to sign on while protecting personal data.
According to Roam, its network has three million WiFi hotspots and two million users across 190 countries.
