Rising Threats: How Scammers Exploit Telegram’s Support for TON Blockchain

Apr 23, 2024 at 09:11 pm

Scammers are exploiting Telegram's support for Toncoin, defrauding victims through referral links in private groups. The scam involves victims purchasing "boosters" from a separate bot, leading to irreversible losses ranging from $2 to $2,700. Toncoin's price has declined sharply, highlighting market volatility and the heightened risk associated with cryptocurrency investments.

Rising Threats: How Scammers Exploit Telegram’s Support for TON Blockchain

Cybercriminals Exploit Telegram's TON Support to Perpetrate Cryptocurrency Scams

Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered a sophisticated scam targeting Telegram users worldwide, exploiting the platform's integration with The Open Network (TON) blockchain and its native token, Toncoin. Scammers have leveraged the platform's popularity to execute elaborate schemes that pose significant risks to investors.

Heightened Scam Activity Since November 2023

Kaspersky, a renowned cybersecurity firm, has documented a cryptocurrency scam that has been operating since November 2023, targeting Toncoin (TON) holders on Telegram. The timing of this scam coincides with a surge in interest and investment in TON, highlighting the opportunistic nature of cybercriminals.

Scam Mechanics

The scam involves luring victims into joining exclusive earning programs through referral links distributed by friends or acquaintances. Victims are directed to an unofficial Telegram bot that connects to their Web3 wallets and purports to facilitate cryptocurrency storage. However, the true objective is to surreptitiously pilfer their funds.

Scammers provide an air of legitimacy by instructing victims to purchase Toncoin through reputable sources such as the official Telegram bot, peer-to-peer marketplaces, or cryptocurrency exchanges.

The crucial phase of the scam involves tricking victims into purchasing "boosters" from a separate scam bot. These boosters, whimsically named "bike," "car," "train," "plane," and "rocket," range in cost from 5 to 500 TON, translating into irreversible losses of $2 to $2,700, according to Kaspersky.

Pyramid Scheme Mechanism

The scam operates on the principles of a pyramid scheme disguised as a referral program. Victims are encouraged to create private Telegram groups and invite friends through referral links, accompanied by video instructions available in both Russian and English.

Financial losses become inevitable as victims are enticed by false promises of earning from two sources: a fixed payment for each friend recruited and recurring commissions based on their booster purchases.

Toncoin Market Trend

Toncoin's price has experienced a recent decline. CoinMarketCap data indicates that the token is currently trading at $5.65, representing a 7.13% drop over the past 24 hours and a 9.41% decline over the previous week. This volatility serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with cryptocurrency investments, especially in light of targeted scams.

Outlook for TON and Other Cryptocurrencies

Despite the recent scams, Toncoin (TON) and ETFSwap (ETFS) are forecast to outperform Solana (SOL) during the forthcoming bull market. This optimism stems from their innovative blockchain solutions and increasing adoption rates, as previously reported by Crypto News Flash.

Mitigation Measures

To safeguard against such scams, users are strongly advised to exercise caution when interacting with unofficial Telegram bots. Legitimate cryptocurrency storage and management services should be accessed through official channels, such as official apps or websites. Additionally, investors should thoroughly research projects and consult reputable sources before making any investment decisions.
