A wider cryptocurrency market bull run began in early November. While large-cap cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) experienced significant gains, altcoins and meme coins saw even more impressive gains in late 2024.

Meme coins like Dogecoin (DOGE) have already provided triple-digit returns, but the meme coin market remains as dynamic as ever, with even new entrants seeing rapid gains.

One XRP Ledger meme coin has recently seen a substantial increase in price — Kitty Cup (KCUP) is currently trading about 85.66% higher than yesterday. The question remains: can this rally be sustained?

KCUP was launched on October 22 and is currently trading at $0.001129, up from $0.0006114 on December 29, with a total market capitalization of just $1 million.

This XRP meme coin has seen an impressive rise, but it's unlikely to continue.

As shown in the chart above, KCUP’s price action over the shorter time frame has been quite volatile. Such drastic movements are usually indicative of low liquidity. Except for the largest candles shown in the chart, KittyCup does indeed show a low level of trading volume.

Moreover, there was no significant catalyst identified for the surge — it seems that this was simply another case of the Internet's enduring love for cats, which are arguably one of the primary sources of memes in general.

However, when utility and fundamentals are not a factor, investors tend to focus on other criteria that they deem important. There is a substantial amount of optimism regarding KCUP online, with traders pointing out the fact that it is the only cat-themed cryptocurrency on the XRP ledger and that the meme it is based on has shown a remarkable degree of staying power in an otherwise ephemeral space.

While those arguments may certainly hold some validity, this is essentially still a bet on the unpredictable whims of the Internet — there are no concrete methods to analyze an asset such as this, so it, unfortunately, remains relegated to being a speculative bet.
