Mar 21, 2025 at 03:40 am

Riot Games denies League of Legends crypto coin launch after hacked social media account

A post on X from the lead gameplay designer for League of Legends, Matt Leung-Harrison, has announced the introduction of a "LOL coin" cryptocurrency. The post, which has since been deleted, was spotted and shared by several people.

In the post, Leung-Harrison explained that the coin was being created in response to player demand and would be used as the official currency on a Web3 network. It would also be integrated into League of Legends, with the implications of its creation to be discussed in greater detail on Riot's official website.

However, after seeing the post and contacting Riot for verification, a spokesperson has confirmed to PCGamesN that Leung-Harrison's account was compromised and the crypto reveal is false.

"We can confirm that the post circulating on X is not legitimate and that Leung-Harrison's account has been compromised," the spokesperson said. "We are working to rectify the situation and inform those who may have seen the post not to click on any links."

The post has now been deleted and Leung-Harrison has regained control of his account.

Leung-Harrison's post read: "Hello everyone, we are excited to announce the upcoming release of LOL coin! In response to community demand, we will be introducing LOL coin as the official currency on a Web3 network.

"The coin is designed to provide players with a new and engaging way to interact with the game and the broader League ecosystem. It will be used for a variety of in-game and out-of-game activities, such as purchasing items, trading with other players, and participating in community events.

"We will be sharing more details about the coin's creation and integration with League of Legends in the coming weeks on our official website. Stay tuned for more updates!"

Earlier today, rumors began circulating online that Riot Games was planning to release a cryptocurrency called LOL coin. The rumors stemmed from a post on X, which was purportedly written by Leung-Harrison and announced the upcoming release of the coin.
