In the rubble of FTX's collapse, Salame has stood apart from his former colleagues like Caroline Ellison and Nishad Singh.
Republican kingmaker Ryan Salame, who is set to begin a seven-year prison sentence on Friday for his role in the FTX scandal, poked fun at his situation in a last-minute LinkedIn career update.
“I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Inmate at FCI Cumberland!” he posted on Thursday.
The update quickly went viral, garnering thousands of reactions and comments. Many users expressed sympathy for Salame, while others criticized him for downplaying the severity of his crimes.
Salame, who was once a rising star in Republican politics, pleaded guilty to several charges in connection with the FTX scandal last year. Prosecutors accused him of participating in a scheme to use customer funds to make illegal political contributions.
Salame's sentence was significantly harsher than that of his former colleagues, Caroline Ellison and Nishad Singh, who both received two-year prison sentences despite their cooperation with the Justice Department.
Throughout his legal troubles, Salame has maintained his innocence and claimed that he was being targeted by prosecutors because of his political affiliation. He did not testify at Bankman-Fried’s trial last fall.
In the last months before his imprisonment, Salame frequently wrote on X about the failures of his lawyers, the alleged lies told by former FTX employees in their retelling of events, and his own culpability when it came to certain crimes.
In the last days before reporting to prison, he even went on a media tour of sorts, including an appearance on Tucker Carlson’s talk show, who shared Salame’s view that partisan prosecutors were stringing him up because of his role as a Republican backer.
