Renewed Solidarity: An Instant Staple for MTG Token Decks

Throughout spoiler season we've had a healthy look at all of the best MTG Aetherdrift cards hitting store shelves in the main set. What we haven't done, however, is spend a ton of time looking at the new cards featured in the Aetherdrift Commander decks. While many of the cards released in these decks are a boon for decks centered around each precon's theme, there are a surprising amount of heavy hitters that can create meaningful value in a larger range of decks.

Renewed Solidarity is a must-have enchantment for any Typal deck that cares about token generation, especially those that can create a lot of them. At three mana, this card is a great value compared to other similar effects, which typically cost around five mana.

However, keep in mind that Renewed Solidarity on its own doesn't generate any value. Instead, it amplifies the value created by other things. So, if you do include this card in your Commander deck, make sure that the amount of value it creates is worth the inclusion.

Interestingly, because this is a triggered ability that occurs at the end of the turn, there are some ways to abuse Renewed Solidarity that don't typically come up for other token doubling effects. Notably, this card stacks with other doubling effects better than they stack with each other.

For example, say that you have an Anointed Procession and a Doubling Season in play. If you create 5 tokens with an effect, having both of these effects will create 20 tokens instead. One effect will double the tokens created to 10, and the next one will double that total to 20.

Renewed Solidarity can create even more tokens when combined with a doubling effect. If 10 Tokens are created with a Doubling Season in play, Renewed Solidarity will trigger at the end of your turn, creating another 10. Doubling Season will double this to 20, creating a grand total of 30 tokens. Not only will this Aetherdrift enchantment be a strong option for Token creature decks, but it may also become a super staple.

Best Homes for Renewed Solidarity

Renewed Solidarity can be found in a variety of different token generator decks, but it will do its best work in specific places. Hare Apparent decks are an example of where the card will thrive.

Not only will Renewed Solidarity be able to double any Rabbit tokens that your Hare Apparents create, but it will also buff all of your Rabbits by one power, including the nontoken Hare Apparent themselves. Cadira, Caller of the Small is a particularly deadly Hare Apparent Commander deck for Renewed Solidarity to appear in.

Renewed Solidarity will also be a compelling upgrade to the Raining Cats & Dogs Secret Lair deck. That deck has always had a bit of an issue making the player choose between two creature types, but a majority of upgrade guides suggest that the deck should focus more on one creature type anyway.

Traditionally, the choice is Cats because they have much stronger support. This is even more true with the recent printing of Ocelot Pride in Modern Horizons 3. Any deck that wants Renewed Solidarity should probably include Ocelot Pride in it anyway, but it would be best if Ocelot Pride and the Cat tokens it generates benefit from the boost offered by the enchantment as well.

Instead of Rin and Seri, Inseperable, Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second may be a better Commander for Renewed Solidarity since you can ensure all the tokens you generate will have the creature type that the enchantment cares about.

Renewed Solidarity has additional synergies with a Marneus Calgar deck over traditional Token Doublers as well, as long as there is a typal theme in your deck. While normal token doublers will not trigger Calgar an additional time, Renewed Solidarity will draw an extra card since it triggers on the end step.

Urza, Chief Artificer is another example of a deck that can use Renewed Solidarity. The Commander may create Constructs at the end step, but as long as you order your triggers properly, Renewed Solidarity will still be able to create another Construct. Just make sure Urza's ability resolves first so your enchantment gets to "see" the token.

Downsides

Renewed Solidarity's synergy doesn't come without downsides. Firstly, if you are primarily generating tokens in the end step, this card will only be able to "see" them if you are able to order your triggers appropriately. That means that any tokens that are not generated at the beginning of the end step will not be seen by the enchantment.

The card also only triggers on your turn. If you are creating tokens on opposing player's turns, Renewed Solidarity isn't going to see them. Of the downsides that Renewed Solidarity has compared to other options, this is likely going to be the biggest one.

The card also only copies creature tokens, so if your deck wants to create Clues, Treasures, or other types of Tokens, Renewed Solidarity won't work. Other token doublers, on the other hand, will still function.

For the most part, many MTG token decks will be able to create a ton of value when using Renewed Solidarity. As long as the majority of token creators in your deck share a certain creature type, you should be able to get enough value out of this enchantment to make it worthwhile. The best part about this card is that it doesn't really have to compete with other token doublers. Commander is a singleton format, after all.
