Rare 50p coin from 2011 that could be worth £3,000 to collectors
Feb 03, 2025 at 07:01 pm
This coveted coin celebrates the 2012 London Olympics with an "aquatics" design featuring a swimmer in goggles and cap.
A rare 50p coin from 2011 could be worth a staggering £3,000 to collectors, with previous exchanges reaching up to £3,500.
The coin, which celebrates the 2012 London Olympics, has an "aquatics" design on the reverse featuring a swimmer in goggles and cap.
Millions of the coins were minted but an unusual feature in the early editions can significantly increase its value.
TikTok account UK Coin Hunt's expert shared: "Now £3,000 for just this 50p, which is absolutely bonkers."
He pointed out that the initial version of the aquatics coin had water lines covering the swimmer's face, which were removed in later issues.
This makes the lined version highly valuable.
"The first version of the coin, the aquatics 50p, had water lines over the swimmer's face which were then removed in later issues, making the lined version very valuable," he said.
"While it may be a rare discovery in everyday change, there's still a possibility of finding one in circulation.
"I would say you're not likely to find it in your change but there is always a chance that you will see one on the internet and you can buy it but it'll cost a lot of money.
"A couple of years ago they were only about £1,000 but now they're fetching anywhere from like £2,500 to £3,500."
Currently, the Britannia Coin Company lists an uncirculated version of this coin for £3,995.
The company describes the coin as being sought-after by collectors and adds: "This striking Aquatics 50p was designed by Jonathan Olliffe.
"In the more common version of this BU 50p the face of the swimmer is clearly visible under the swimming pool waters.
"In this rare variation watery lines appear across the swimmers goggle-wearing visage.
"Supposedly only 600 of these 'lines across the face' Aquatics 50ps were issued before the design was changed making them the rarest base metal 50p ever released."
