This rare 50p coin is skyrocketing in value - do you own one?
Nov 20, 2024 at 07:49 pm
ems can be worth more than you think, with a few reaching the hundreds or even thousands. Now a coin is turning heads on social media and it features King Charles III's portrait.
A rare 50p coin featuring King Charles III's portrait is skyrocketing in value and could be worth up to £100.
The coin, which was released in 2023 as part of the nation's tribute to the King's Coronation year, is now the rarest 50p coin in active circulation. Only 200,000 of the coins were released to UK banks and Post Offices.
TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard revealed the coin is even the most sought-after 50p, overtaking the Kew Gardens coin.

"The Atlantic Salmon 50p coin is now the rarest 50p coin in active circulation with only 200,000 released to UK banks and Post Offices.
"This is an exciting day in the world of coin collecting as the Atlantic Salmon coin takes the crown from the almighty Kew Gardens 50p which held the title for the past 15 years."

Released at the end of 2023, the Atlantic Salmon 50p was part of the nation's tribute to King Charles' Coronation year. The user added: "The coin has now officially overtaken the Kew Gardens 50p which had a mintage of 210,000 when it was introduced in 2009.
"And now the 2023 Atlantic Salmon 50p is the most sought-after 50p in circulation. The coin has already started to gain traction on the likes of eBay and coin groups, and the price is skyrocketing but does seem to be settling around the £100 mark."
With just 200,000 copies minted in circulation, the Royal Mint recently named the coin as the rarest currently in the UK. It knocked off the "highly collectible" 2009 Kew Gardens 50p off the top spot for the first time in 15 years.
The Atlantic Salmon is said to be the most rare and therefore valuable as Royal Mint's Rebecca Morgan said: "Finding these special designs, like the Atlantic salmon, in your change is a win for all collectors."
So do you think you own a version yourself? According to the comments section of the TikTok video, many seem to think they have one of the pieces in their stash. One said: "I have them all," although another added: "So hard to find!"
