Rare 50p Brexit coin minted on January 31, 2020, is selling for £3,000 on eBay

A rare 50p coin minted to mark Brexit is being sold on eBay for £3,000 - despite being worth just 50p.

The coin, which is dated January 31, 2020, was minted to commemorate the UK's exit from the European Union.

It features Queen Elizabeth II on one side and the words "Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations" on the other.

Other listings on the website have varied in price with some asking for as much as £35,000 - 70,000 times the coin's stated value.

The description states: "This 50p coin is an incredibly rare find for any collector or enthusiast.

"The coin is a great representation of the Elizabeth II era and is a perfect addition to any collection.

"The coin is a featured refinement of the rare 50p coin and was manufactured in the United Kingdom, specifically in Great Britain.

"It is an excellent piece of British currency history and is sure to impress. The coin is not modified and is in its original state."

The coin is listed for £3,000 with £5 delivery or free collection in person.

According to Change Checker, there were 10,001,000 of the coins minted and it is the only official UK coin to commemorate leaving the EU.

The minting of the coins was ordered by Sajid Javid, then Chancellor of the Exchequer and marks the date that the UK left the EU, January 31, 2020.

The coins were originally supposed to be minted in advance of the original departure date of October 31.

However, the Brexit delay meant that nearly a million coins had to be melted down and put aside until a new leave date was confirmed.
