Rare Kew Gardens 50p coin sells for £700 on eBay

A rare 50p coin depicting Kew Gardens has sold for £700 on eBay.

Described on the Royal Mint website as the "most sought-after" 50p, only 210,000 of the coins were released into circulation in 2009 and now almost all of them are in private hands.

The face side of the coin depicts the botanical garden, while the reverse design - created by Christopher Le Brun - shows an intricate design of the famous Chinese Pagoda at Kew.

The coin was created to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanical Gardens.

The seller said: "This rare 2009 Kew Gardens 50p coin celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanical Gardens. Graded by NGC as PF 70 Ultra Cameo, The brilliant uncirculated version of this coin is also available.

"This commemorative 50p coin is part of the British decimal coinage series and was minted in the United Kingdom. It is a featured refinement in the proof Kew 2009 50p coins category and is denominated as 50p. The coin is not circulated and is in BUNC condition."

In addition to the £700 fee, the delivery cost for the coin was £15.

The seller does not accept returns.
