A rare dime coin from the 19th century is worth almost $2 million, making it the most valuable one to exist.

As the latest discovery in coin collecting shows, investing in rare coins can be a gamechanger in 2025. Certain details need to be looked out for but once they are found, they can be cashed in for huge sums.

While the one in question isn’t worth as much as the Lincoln Wheat Penny, it still has an impressive value that’s sure to change a lucky collector’s bank account. The S Barber Dime is considered the rarest dime and most valuable of them all.

Only 24 were created in 1894 and only nine are known to still exist.

The coin was created by San Francisco Mint Superintendent John Daggett, who minted them for his banker friends. After having some left over, he gave a few to his daughter. She spent one of them on an ice cream, unknowingly of the value it would turn out to have.

On the obverse, Lady Liberty was carved into the silver plate while the other side was engraved with a wreath design, which was typical for a Barber dime design. It was finished with a proof-like shine.

In 2016, one of the dimes was found and auctioned, selling for a whopping $1.99 million. It is now estimated to be worth around $1,997,500.

While its value stands out from the rest made in that period, other 19th-century coins have notable value.

A few decades earlier, the CC Seated Liberty Dime was created as part of the U.S. Mint’s decision to increase the weight of coins. To differentiate the new coins at the time, arrows were added beside the date.

Before the design was implemented on April 1, 1873, a small number of dimes were already produced at the Carson City Mint, all of which had no arrows engraved onto them. They were only designed with a Seated Liberty on the obverse and a wreath on the reverse.

None of those specific coins have been found, except for one. Now, the dime is estimated to be worth $300,000 to $400,000.

The dimes without arrows have also gained an impressive value of $250,000 to $300,000 due to the handful that survived in collected condition.

Coins created during this decade are highly desirable to collectors as they represent an important period in Carson City Mint history.
