Rare 50-Cent Coin Worth a Small Fortune: The Incused Flag Find
Mar 25, 2024 at 09:42 am
A rare detail on the Australian 50-cent coin from 2000, known as the "incused flag," has the potential to significantly increase its value. This "sunken-down" feature in the Union Jack distinguishes these coins from the more common variety, with an estimated 200,000 in circulation. Coin enthusiast Michael McCauley suggests checking for this feature, as these coins have recently sold for up to $70, making them a valuable find.
Could a 50-Cent Coin Be Worth a Fortune?
The Incused Flag Coin: A Rare Find
A keen-eyed coin collector has uncovered a subtle detail that could elevate the value of certain 50-cent coins to 140 times their face value. Michael McCauley, an avid Victorian coin enthusiast, urges Australians to scrutinize their 50-cent pieces, specifically those commemorating the millennium.
The Royal Australian Mint minted 16.6 million of these coins, adorned with the Australian flag. However, a select few possess a peculiar feature in the Union Jack that has escaped most eyes.
"The cross pieces in the flag are lower down, as if they've sunk into the coin," McCauley explains in a TikTok video. "They estimate that around 200,000 of these particular coins, with the sunken-down features, were released into circulation."
Unlike the more common variety, where the flag appears raised from the coin's surface, the "incused flag" coins have the flag recessed into the metal. McCauley notes that these coins have recently fetched prices ranging from $45 to $70, making them a valuable find.
"Keep your eyes peeled for these 50-cent coins from 2000," he advises. "Examine the Union Jack and see if the metal is lower down."
Other Rare 50-Cent Coins to Watch For
Beyond the incused flag coin, other 50-cent coins warrant attention. Round 50-cent coins minted in 1966 and composed of 80% silver now command a premium of $15 due to their silver content.
Additionally, an exceptionally rare 1988 coin, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the First Fleet's arrival, could fetch nearly $15,000. This coin's uniqueness stems from a Royal Australian Mint error, where some coins bear both the standard coat of arms and the commemorative design.
