Pink Drainer Emerges as a Major Powerhouse in DeFi

Mar 27, 2024 at 01:05 pm

The notorious crypto hacking group Pink Drainer has emerged as a major holder of sDAI tokens, staking a substantial 12 million DAI into the DeFi lending protocol Spark, constituting nearly 1.194% of the total supply. This revelation raises concerns as Pink Drainer, known for its sophisticated phishing tactics and involvement in laundering illicit gains, has stolen over $50 million worth of crypto assets in the past two years, posing a significant threat to the DeFi sector.

Pink Drainer Emerges as a Major Powerhouse in DeFi

Is Pink Drainer the New DeFi Whales?

The infamous crypto hacking group Pink Drainer has caused chaos in the DeFi space. Recent information from PeckShield has revealed that Pink Drainer-linked addresses have staked a whopping 12 million DAI in the DeFi lending protocol Spark. This accounts for almost 1.194% of the total sDAI tokens, making Pink Drainer one of the largest sDAI holders.

Pink Drainer: A Major Player in DeFi

PeckShield's data suggests that Pink Drainer's influence goes beyond its holdings. Operating as a Scam-as-a-Service provider, the group has stolen over $50 million worth of crypto assets over the past two years. Last week, MistTrack echoed these findings, indicating that Pink Drainer was using MakerDAO to launder its illicit gains.

Pink Drainer's tactics have been highly effective, often using phishing campaigns to target prominent figures. MicroStrategy's X account fell victim to a fraudulent Ethereum token promotion, resulting in losses of over $440,000. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Mira Murati, CTO of OpenAI, have also been targeted by Pink Drainer's phishing schemes.

Wallet Drainers: A Growing Threat

Crypto wallet drainers have become increasingly prevalent, replacing the notorious Monkey Drainer, which exited the scene after being exposed by on-chain detective ZachXBT. Inferno Drainer, Pussy Drainer, and Venom Drainer have joined Pink Drainer in stealing over $295 million from nearly 324,000 victims, as per Scam Sniffer's report.

What's Next for Pink Drainer?

With Pink Drainer holding a significant amount of sDAI, the DeFi sector could face further disruptions. It remains to be seen how the hacking group plans to use its position in the market. As the DeFi ecosystem continues to evolve, it's crucial to stay vigilant and be aware of potential threats.
