This 128-year-old penny error makes the coin worth £600 - do you have one?

A keen eye for detail could help you spot a coin error which makes the old money a must-have for collectors.

Coin expert Coin Collecting Wizard has highlighted the coin on TikTok, and explained how to spot the error.

They said: "This penny has a date of 1893 and you need to check this penny for a very strange error that makes the coin valuable.

"Known as the 1893 over two penny, what you need to pay close attention to is the number three in the date.

"The number three almost looks like the start of a number two.

"The best way to notice this is where the three joins up in the middle. If it does not look like they join up neatly then you have found it.

"The obverse of the coin is the usual Queen Victoria bun head and the reverse side is Britannia sitting holding a trident.

"This is such a difficult error to spot but it is worth your time as uncirculated versions of this coin have sold for £600."

Five Incredibly Rare and Valuable British Coins

What makes a coin valuable?

The 50 pence piece has become the most valued and collected coin in the UK, with many collectable designs appearing on its heptagonal canvas.

Its 27.5mm diameter makes it the largest of any British coin, and allows space for decorative pictures. It has often been used to celebrate big events over the past 50 years of British history.

The rarest coins tend to be of the greatest value, with the mintage (number of coins with each design made) being the fundamental attraction for collectors.

Other aspects of the coin which increase value are the condition of the coin and whether it has an error in its design.

The way in which it is sold can also determine the coin’s value - while some coin collectors will bid vast amounts of money on eBay or at auction, others opt for more robust valuations by selling via a coin dealer.

Here is a list of the top 10 most valuable coins, when they were made and how many were minted:
